Correctly tagging people in your posts is crucial regardless of whether you’re using Instagram to stay connected with friends, network with potential clients or market your small business.

If you’ve got posts that you’ve already posted but aren’t correctly tagged, don’t worry! In this article, we’ll take a look at how to tag people on Instagram after posting. There are a couple of different ways you can do it, so lets jump straight into it.

How to tag someone on Instagram after posting

The easiest way to tag someone in a post after it’s already live is to go back and edit your post. It’s super easy to do and should only take a minute.

Below is a step by step guide of exactly what to do:

  • Step 1 – Find the photo you want to tag and tap the ‘…’ icon. Then tap ‘edit’.
  • Step 2 – Tap ‘tag people’ button at the bottom of the photo
  • Step 3 – Tap the photo to tag someone
  • Step 4 – Search the person you want to tag and tap their name
  • Step 5 – Tap ‘Done’ in the top right

And it’s as simple as that. You can tag people at any time, even if it’s been months since you made the post.

How to tag someone in the comments on Instagram

If you’d rather not tag the actual photo, you can opt to tag people in the post comments instead. It’s a little quicker than going back and tagging the photo and achieves basically the same effect. The person will be notified about the post, and other users will see that they are included in the post too.

Below are the steps of how to tag someone in the comment section:

  • Step 1 – Tap the comment button
  • Step 2 – Type ‘@’ followed by the person’s username that you want to tag
  • Step 3 – Tap their name and add any other comments you want to make
  • Step 4 – Tap post and you’re done

How to tag someone in an Instagram Story after posting?

So it’s fairly easy to tag someone on Instagram after posting if it’s a regular post, but if it’s an IG story, then things get a little more complicated. The truth is that you actually can’t make any edits to an Instagram story once it’s gone live.

The only option you have is to delete the post and re-upload it with the correct tag. To do this all you need to do is tap the ‘…’ icon in the bottom right of your screen and you will see the option to delete the post. This is the best thing to do if you notice your mistake immediately after posting.

However, if you don’t notice right away it might not be worth it. Instagram stories only last for 24 hours before disappearing anyway, so it’s probably easier to just leave it up and try to remember for next time.

So there you have it, everything you need to know about how to tag on Instagram after posting. If you have any other burning questions about how to use Instagram, check out some of the other how-to guides on our blog.
